Have you ever noticed on road that what is the meaning of the vehicles bearing different types of number plates?

1. White Number Plate with Black Letters:

The vehicles having black letters on white plate are private vehicles and such vehicles cannot be used for any commercial purposes.


2. Yellow Number Plate with Black Letters:

The vehicles having black letters on yellow plates are commercial vehicles such as Taxi, Truck, Auto Rickshaw, Lorry etc and these vehicles can also be used for personal purposes. The drivers of these types of vehicle shall have commercial vehicle driving license.


3. Black Number Plate with Yellow Letters:

The vehicles having yellow letters on black plates are also commercial vehicles but these are little different from vehicles having black lettered on yellow plates. These vehicles are available on rent for self-driving and interestingly the drivers of these vehicles need not to own a commercial vehicle driving license.


4. Light Blue Number Plate with White Letters:

The vehicles having white letters on light blue plates belong to foreign consulates. These number plates bear UN, CD or CC, which stand for United Nations, Diplomatic Corps and Consular Corps respectively. 


5. Red Number Plate:

6. Red Number Plate with White Letters:

Red colored plate with white text thereon indicates temporary registration. There are used on vehicles before registration and on test-vehicles.


7. Number Plates with Upward Pointing Arrow:

Military vehicles follow a unique numbering system unlike any other license plate numbers. The numbers are registered under the Ministry of Defense, New Delhi. The first/third character is an upward-pointing arrow, known as a Broad Arrow, used in many parts of the British Commonwealth. The two digits succeeding the arrow show the year in which the Military procured the vehicle.


8. Green Number Plate:

All electric vehicles in India will soon get a new green license plate.


a. The private electric vehicles will have a green backing and white fonts; and

b. commercial electric vehicles will have a green background and yellow fonts.

These will also be applicable to electric buses and other electric commercial vehicles.
